When Is the Best Time of Year for Madeira Hiking Permits?

Madeira is a year-round hiking destination, so permits are needed in every season. Demand is highest in summer and around holidays, and easiest in the quieter shoulder and winter months.

Summer (roughly July to early September) and the Christmas and Easter periods see the most permit demand, so the popular trails fill earliest then. Spring and autumn offer a good balance of settled weather and lower pressure, and winter is the quietest for permits, though the high peaks can be cold, wet or occasionally closed for weather.

Weather matters as much as the calendar. The north and the peaks catch more cloud and rain, while the south and east stay drier. On any given week, the clearest-forecast days fill faster than the rest, regardless of season.

The snapshot below reflects current availability across the trails, monitored minute by minute since January 2026. Our day-by-day archive began on 27 July 2026, and a month-by-month report will follow once enough history has accumulated to show reliable seasonal patterns.
