How Far Ahead Should You Book a Madeira Hiking Permit?
For the most popular trails, reserve as soon as your dates are fixed, ideally one to two weeks ahead. Quieter trails can often be booked a few days out, and some have same-day slots.
Madeira's protected PR trails use a fixed daily quota of tourist (non-resident) permits through the official Simplifica reservation system. The busiest trails, such as PR1 (Pico do Areeiro) and PR8 (Ponta de Sao Lourenco), draw down their tourist quota fastest, so the earliest open date is usually the best signal of how far ahead you need to book.
A practical rule: if a trail is showing high booking pressure, treat its earliest open date as your deadline and book the moment your plans are set. If it is showing low pressure, you usually have flexibility within the same week, including weekends.
Permits are reservation-only, and residents are exempt from the fee but still need a reservation, so the tourist quota is what fills. Weekends and clear-weather days fill faster than midweek or shoulder-season dates.
