What Time Should You Start a Madeira Hike?
There is no single "correct" start time. The best slot depends on what you want from the day: sunrise above the clouds, clear midday views, cooler afternoon light, or the best chance of a cloud-free summit.
Permits are booked by time slot rather than a fixed departure, so you choose the entry window that suits your plan. Early starts are popular on the high peaks (PR1, PR1.2) because summits are most often clear soon after sunrise and cloud tends to build through the morning. Sunrise starts also mean cooler walking and quieter trails.
On coastal and lower trails, heat and sun exposure matter more than cloud. On the treeless PR8 (Ponta de Sao Lourenco) an early or late slot avoids the midday sun. Levada walks in laurel forest, like PR9 and PR6, stay shaded and comfortable through most of the day.
If your goal is a specific experience, plan around it: a summit sunrise, a golden-hour finish, or simply the clearest forecast window. Then book the time slot that fits. Any slot with tourist availability can be reserved, subject to the daily quota.
