It depends on the season. From late April to mid August the sun sets over the sea on the north coast (Porto Moniz, Seixal, Sao Vicente, Boaventura, Sao Jorge). From late October to mid February the southwest coast gets ocean sunsets (Ponta do Sol, Calheta, Madalena do Mar). Ponta do Pargo on the west tip sees ocean sunsets all year. Can you see the sun set over the sea from Funchal?

Yes, from late August to late April. The best spot is Praia Formosa at the west end of the city, where the sea horizon runs open toward Camara de Lobos. From the marina and old town the deep-winter sun sets close to the Ponta da Cruz headland. In midsummer the sun sets behind the island for the whole south coast; head to the north coast instead.

From about 22 April to 20 August the sun sets over open ocean at Porto Moniz, to the northwest. Outside those dates it sets behind the headlands. The dates repeat every year because they are set by the sun's position, not the weather.

Canical and the Ponta de Sao Lourenco peninsula on the east tip see ocean sunrises all year. Machico gets them from early August to early May, Santa Cruz and Canico from autumn to early spring, and the north coast (Santana, Sao Jorge, Porto da Cruz) around May to August when the sun rises to the northeast over the sea.
