Compadres Feast

The ‘Festa dos Compadres’ marks the opening of the Carnival season in Madeira, a tradition going back to more than 50 years, celebrated with great enthusiasm in Santana. The event features gigantic figures parading through the streets with humor, color, and joy, culminating in a theatrical enactment, judgment, conviction, and burning of puppets representing 'Compadres' and 'Comadres'.
