Madeira Bus Tickets and Fares
Bus tickets and fares in Madeira
You can pay for Madeira buses onboard or with a mobile app. This page explains the options and what to expect.
Paying onboard
You can buy a single ticket from the driver when you board. Cash is the simplest option, so carry some coins and small notes. The fare depends on how far you travel.
The Giro app
Giro is the shared ticketing app for Madeira buses. You buy a ticket in the app and show the QR code when you board. It works across the operators, which helps when a trip uses more than one company.
How fares work
Fares are based on the operator and the distance, so a short city hop costs less than a long interurban route. Travel within Funchal is priced differently from the longer routes to the coast and the mountains. Check the operator or the Giro app for the current price of your route.
Trips with a transfer
Some journeys change from one company to another along the way, so you may need a separate ticket for each leg. Keep your ticket or app receipt until you finish, and ask the driver or check the Giro app if you are unsure. The journey planner shows where a transfer happens.
